Dennis J. Allen, of Quarryville, was driving a car when he approached a stop sign at the intersection of Kirkwood Pike/Route 472 and Stuart Run Road in Colerain Township on Monday, Nov. 11 at 7:31 a.m., according to police.
Allen attempted to turn left onto Kirkwood Pike/Route 472 but failed to yield the right of way to another car traveling down the road, police said in a release. The second car tried to brake but couldn’t stop in time, leading to the collision.
Allen was rushed to Lancaster General Hospital, where he later succumbed to his injuries, the release states. The driver of the second vehicle suffered minor cuts to his hands, according to police.
Allen’s obituary, published by Dewald Funeral and Cremation Services, Inc., notes his 43-year marriage to his wife, Susan M. (Pleger) Allen, as a cornerstone of his life. Born in Lancaster to John L. and Ruth E. (Zimmerman) Allen, he graduated from Solanco High School in 1968 and went on to work at Armstrong World Industries for 33 years as a planner and scheduler, retiring without ever taking a sick day. Following his time at Armstrong, Allen worked for Compliance Navigation Specialists until his retirement in 2016.
Known for his strong work ethic and dedication, Allen was also an active member of his community, attending Grace Community Church of Willow Street and previously Mount Hope United Methodist Church.
In addition to his wife, Allen is survived by his sisters-in-law, Kathy (George) Crouse and Deb (Ron) Irwin; a niece; nephews; great-nieces and great-nephews; and his mother-in-law, Mary Pleger.
A memorial service was held on Wednesday, Nov. 20, at Grace Community Church of Willow Street. Donations in his memory can be made to Rawlinsville Camp Meeting or the Growing with Grace Fund at Grace Community Church.
